It’s that time of year again when there is much excitement in the air and everyone is looking forward to the holidays. At Turpin’s, we experience much of the same thing every December. Each December Jason can’t wait to start the New Year and dive right into new projects and tours, but we would like to take a few moments to reflect on the past year and once again thank our sponsors and hosts and of course spotlight The Chester County Food Bank.
Every year we open the outdoor living season with our Garden Tour, held on the last Saturday of June. Had we known that we were about to experience one of the wettest summers on record we might have taken a little more time to enjoy the dry weather and stunning gardens but of course we had no idea what Mother Nature had planned for 2018. This tour seemed to inspire and delight all that attended. We started our tour at Pam and Joe’s in West Chester. Their property always surprises first time visitor’s because nestled behind their pretty house there are gardens that are lush and green and then there is Pam’s devotion to repurpose items. There are so many reasons why this property is special. Pam and Joe love to host and they like to spend evenings with friends and family around their much loved fire-pit. Lunch was lovely as always, enjoyed in Kennett Square on a spectacular century old property. Candice loves to share her home and its history with all who visit this lovely Chester County residence. This gem of a tour really does start the outdoor living season off just right!
Once we were up and running the BIG tour was just around the corner. We had the pleasure of welcoming about 400 visitors to our Water Garden Weekend Tour this year! Always held on the last full weekend in July this tour is like no other tour that we host. This mega tour included 40 residential properties all featuring some sort of amazing water feature. From ponds to pondless waterfalls and fountains, this tour has it all, not to mention some extraordinary gardens! We had 52 people join us on the bus tour and that, of course, meant lunch at one of our stops. Adrienne and Terri graciously hosted lunch this year and once again the weather cooperated with us. Their property offered many areas to have a seat and enjoy their spectacular water feature from multiple viewing points. Saturday night’s barbecue and festivities were much drier than the previous years and for that, we were very grateful! A Silent Auction, a Raffle, and prizes filled the evening with excitement and the barbecue added the perfect finishing touch to a perfect summer evening spent outside in rural Chester County!
Our last, but never least tour in 2018 was our ever popular Evening Water Garden Tour. Sometimes referred to as the crown jewel of our tours, this bus-guided tour is a wonderful way to spend a September evening with friends and family. This year we started and ended our tour at Esther’s in Downingtown and that provided us with a spectacular backdrop for appetizers and desserts. The progressive dinner gave our visitors a chance to sit back and enjoy the evening. Brian and Chris really know how to host a party! They are known for their beautiful sprawling property and their generous hospitality, and they don’t shy away when we say we will be bringing three buses and about 85 people for dinner!
The 2018 pond tour season would not be possible without all the hardworking and friendly hosts and the sponsors who support us and the Chester County Food Bank. Working together with hosts, sponsors, friends, and family this past year we were able to donate $25,000.00 to the Chester County Food Bank, bringing our total donations to over $147,000. When taking on tours of this magnitude, please know that we would never be able to do this without our magnanimous sponsors and our gracious pond tour hosts who have supported us and the Chester County Food Bank.
Please consider supporting these sponsors in the upcoming new year. We would like to say a huge thank you to all who helped through time, talent and monetarily to support the Chester County Food Bank and all the wonderful programs that they provide for the community.
Thank you to our 2018 Sponsors!
Jennifer & Bob McNeil
Stay tuned for next year as we hear the Chester County Food Bank has some exciting news about a possible expansion of services in our neck of the woods. 2019 will also mark their 10th Anniversary of serving others. And it all started with a guy, a truck and a generous heart, congrats CCFB and all who work to end hunger in Chester County!
